Stamp-less folded letter written from Mitau dated '12th Aug 1844', addressed to France with 'Aus Russland/ Franco - Tout' in black on face (Van der Linden 326), with circular Marapau 'Aug 14' transit in red and hand-struck 'Tilsit/ 27. Aug' on reverse in black, oval 'A.E.D.' in red (Affranchissement Etranger Destination) with 'P.P.' and rated '15' at top left and accountancy '28 1/2' , charged '2/1' in black ink on reverse (erased) and charged '2/5' with Bordeaux receiver '6th Sept'.
Very nice item of mail from Jelgava, until 1917 the city was officially referred to as MITAU routed via Tilsit.
