Burma. (India - Great Britain). 1943. Air Mail Official envelope written from the 'Government of Burma, Defense Department' and headed 'On His Majesty's Service' addressed to 'E.F.H. Evans, Worcester' , endorsed 'By Fast Airmail' and dated '9th Oct 43', bearing Great Britain SG 463, 1d scarlet and SG 486, 1d pale scarlet (9) tied on arrival by rubber London double ring '29th Oct 43'.

Cover addressed to the brother of 'Major J.G.W. Evans who was part of the Burma Frontier Force in China. He was killed leading his patrol of LAHU LEVIES (Unit) on an assault on two machine gun posts in the vicinity of Mongpawk, Kengtung State, Burma. The Lahu Levies had been raised by Major Evans at the request of General Lu, General Officer Commanding 93rd Division Chinese Central Government Army in December 1942. The Unit of the Burma Frontier Force in co-operation with the Chinese operated on the Northern Borders of Kengtung State against the Japanese and Siamese Forces. The Lahu Levies was the smallest operating unit in Burma and fought from December 1942 until the death of Major Evans on April 8th 1943 at Mong Pawk.

Shimla was the headquarters of the exiled Burmese Government from late 1942 after the occupation of Burma by the Japanese.
