During the French Revolutionary Wars the Dutch Republic (Cape of Good Hope) was occupied by the French in 1795. The Cape Colony then became a French Vassal and enemy of the British who were at war with France. British Troops invaded and occupied the Colony the same year. Britain relinquished control of the territory in 1803 but re-occupied the Colony on 19th January 1806 after the Battle of Blaauwberg. The Dutch formerly ceded the territory to the British in the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1814. Hence mail from the Netherlands to the Cape is scarce after 1795.
