1913 | New Caledonia

Ref: DR18264
  • £375.00

French Colonies. (New Caledonia). 1913. Printed Matter envelope headed 'L. Ballande Fils Aine/ Noumea' addressed to the "Gendarmerie, Hienghene' bearing New Caledonia Yvert 91, 5c green tied by 'Nlle Caledonie/ Sce Mme Cote Est' double ring (Salles 2271) dated '6th Sept 13'. Scarce item of mail posted on board the steamers around the New Caledonia coast.

The corners of the envelope have been cut off to show the contents contained a post-card with no message.

In forty years of studying postal history I have seen very few such items of printed matter mail (with cut corners). One of the few items I remember was in the David Feldman specialized sale of Korea from 1990.

A one framer exhibit on the subject would prove most challenging.
